Sex to fall asleep

Ladies! You’ve been told that men fall asleep straight after the deed, that it is a well-known weakness of the stronger sex, that it’s biological, that they can’t help it, but that they still love you and you shouldn’t take it the wrong way.

Drop Glamour! They’re only telling you half the story. It’s not even the part of the story that really concerns you, even. Because sex to learn how to fall asleep fast is definitely a thing- but not only for men, and not just any old kind of sex. While you’re in the throes of passion, things happen inside the bodies of men and women alike.

If you’re trying even a bit, having sex and having a sports session is really the same deal. In any case, some key hormones are released whether you’re doing one or the other.

  • Endorphins

This “natural morphine” is an analgesic hormone. It lowers your pain sensitivity and calms you down, which puts you in the right mood to fall asleep.

  • Dopamine

The pleasure hormone that gives you the sense of bliss you get when you’ve accomplished a task or obtained what you wanted. Dopamine is the key element of the reward system, a biological learning mechanism essential to the survival of all mammals. If you satisfy one of your body’s needs (thirst, hunger, sexual desire…), your body will reward you with dopamine, and floods you with a sense of well-being. Some drugs like opioids or alcohol directly affect the reward system. It is the heart of all dependency problems (for cannabis, it’s another story).

However, some hormones make a difference because of sex:

  • Melanin

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that your body produces while you’re in a romantic relationship. Thanks to serotonin, your relationships last and don’t stop after a quickie in the dark with a stranger after a couple beers. Serotonin is synthesized by the epiphysis (a gland in your brain) to produce melanin, a hormone that makes you fall asleep.

  • Prolactin

Prolactin is responsible for the feeling of ultimate satisfaction after a successful sexual encounter, and like melanin it makes you fall asleep. In any case, that’s what a study from the medical university of Tokyo showed in 2010: injected with prolactin, rats immediately showed signs of exhaustion.

  • Oxytocin

Oxytocin is released during an orgasm. This opioid is the hormone of familial and romantic attachment… meaning, the faithfulness hormone. Oxcytocin is found exclusively in monogamous animals. It has many uses, but most of all it has an anti-stress anti-anxiety effect that helps you stay zen.

In fact, you don’t need to have a partner or even someone else to take advantage of sleep hormones. Giving yourself orgasms has the same effect! With a small downside: full intercourse releases 4 times more prolactin than rubbing one out on your own.

Verdict? Sleep around with anyone and everyone to combine the hormonal benefits of the beast with two backs? Well, not if you want to take advantage of oxytocin and melanin in the long run.

No worries for all you singles out there who want to get in great shape: a couple isn’t a prerequisite to sleep well. Although sex, love and Tinder all have their own advantages, happiness is a state of mind above all, and sleep is too. Stay positive!

And for those of you who can’t yet access that state of rapturous joy, Dodow’s here to help you out! ;)
